Razer is known for their line-up of gaming products which includes mice, keyboards and laptops. The newest addition to this line-up is now a monitor named the Raptor 27, a 27 inch monitor which supports HDR400 and FreeSync 2.

Being produced by Razer, this monitor has all the things you’d expect a gaming monitor to have. Furthermore, Razer have also added a few innovations of their own.

Design

The first thing you’ll notice is how well built the display is. Aluminium is used throughout the monitor’s build, finished in a nice matte black, similar to the styling used in Razer’s laptop line-up. Furthermore, the corners are sleek and squared off, giving a very modern look to the monitor.

Interestingly, you won’t find RGB LED strips strapped to each and every surface of the laptop. Rather, you will only find RBG lighting at the base of the monitor, which gives off a subtle glow. As expected, the RGB lighting is controlled through the Razer Synapse 3 software, which allows for synchronisation of lighting between Chroma-powered devices.

If you use VESA mounting for your monitor, then this monitor is not for you. This is because this monitor does not support VESA mounting and can only be used with the supplied stand. On the bright side, the stand is made of high quality materials. The monitor is held securely in place, with little wobble noticed.

One of the best features the stand has is the possibility for cable management. The screen can be tilted back up to 90 degrees to expose the downward-facing ports. This provides very easy access to all of the ports at the back of the monitor. Connecting all the cables was a breeze. The cables are then threaded through and lined down the back of the stand. For the best cable management you can have, we recommend using the flat neon green cables supplied by Razer.

An intuitive five-way joystick is located on the lower back part of the panel. The OSD software offers various gaming modes including modes for FPS, Racing, MMO and Streaming.

Features

Although it might not have the best specifications on paper, for $700 it offers various technologies a gamer might want. Starting off, the monitor is able to achieve a refresh rate of 144Hz. This refresh rate is enough for fast paced FPS games where the refresh rate is very essential and offers a competitive advantage. A very fast 4ms response time when using overdrive and a 2560×1440 resolution are also great features for gaming.

However, now let’s talk about the HDR feature offered by this monitor first. Although the monitor is marked as offering HDR functionality, do not that it only offers HDR400. This isn’t ‘true’. However, it’s good to know that this monitor does support HDR to some extent, with peak brightness of 420 nits. In Plane Switching is used as a panel technology, which means this monitor offers very good colours. We didn’t notice any backlight bleeding, however, as expected, black levels are never on par with a VA monitor. The Razer monitor is able to achieve 95% of DCI-P3 colour gamut, however, panel like the LG 34GK950F does offer better colour reproduction due to the Nano IPS technology, enabling the monitor to achieve a 98% DCI-P3 colour gamut.

Conclusion

The Razer Raptor 27 is a monitor of various compromises. It does not have the best colour gamut in the industry, nor is it the brightest monitor on the market. However, the strength of this monitor is not on paper. You have to see the monitor in person to actually appreciate how good looking this monitor is. You won’t be buying this monitor to have the best specs, you will be buying this monitor to have a good looking display with great cable management and subtle but fantastic RGB lighting.
