  • iMail Release 14.48

    iMail continues to see strong user growth, most of which is composed of organic installs. As a result of this growth, more functionality is being developed for iMail, together with periodic bug fixes and performance improvements.

    Support for additional email services

    This release marks a major milestone, where users will be able to add mail accounts for other email services in addition to Apple iCloud. As a result of this added functionality, the way in which a user logs in will be changing slightly.

    In addition to iCloud email accounts, users can now log in to Yahoo and Gmail accounts. Microsoft Outlook accounts are not yet supported, with support being planned for a future release. However, users can still log in to their Microsoft Outlook accounts by manually configuring the IMAP settings during the log in process.

    Changes to iCloud login

    Users who wish to log in their iCloud email accounts will need to make use of either an iCloud.com email, or a me.com email. The app will automatically detect the server settings for the user.

    Login using the normal iCloud username and password is still supported, where an app specific password will be automatically created for iMail after successful login to the user’s Apple iCloud account. To use this feature, the iCloud email address must first be entered in the email box. Once iMail recognises the account type, a button will appear on screen. Pressing on this button will redirect the user to log in using the Apple iCloud normal password.

    Rollout of update

    Initially, the update will be rolled out for a select number of users. This allows me to identify any potential bugs and issue any needed fixes before the update is rolled out to more users.

    If no major issues are encountered, the roll out will be increased to more users through the month of February.

  • SyncCloud Mail now lets you access iCloud and other services

    We have updated SyncCloud Mail (app page) to include a much requested functionality that allows users to access web services without leaving the app.

    Web services can be accessed by opening the web browser, either from the app drawer (if logged in) or from the relevant section in the home screen (if not logged in). Services such as iCloud and Microsoft OneDrive can be quickly accessed by entering the URL in the web-address bar at the top of the screen. This allows you to access website documents and photos stored in the cloud easily without the leaving the app.

    Just like a normal web browser (such as Chrome or Edge), the web browsing features also stored all of your saved cookies from website, so you won’t have to log in each time. The cookies are held within the app itself on your device, and never transmitted to other applications.

    Steps on how to use (Not Logged In):

    1. Open SyncCloud Mail
    2. Select “Open browser”
    3. The default website will load automatically
    4. Press on the address bar to change website
    5. Enter URL of website you want to visit
    6. Press on “>” button to load

    2. Open the drawer
    3. Select “Web Browsing”
    4. The default website will load automatically
    5. Press on the address bar to change website

  • Download files from iCloud on Android

    With the latest update of our Sync for iCloud app, we have just made downloading files from iCloud much easier on Android devices.

    Introduction

    The new download manager lets you see ongoing download tasks which are running in the background, and download tasks which have been downloaded successfully.

    The download manager also provides a list of errored downloads: downloads which could not be completed due to some kind of error, such as due to a network issue.

    Downloading files from iCloud on Android devices could never be easier.

    All you need to do is to log in to your iCloud account using the normal username and password used to log in to the iCloud.com website. If successful, you will be prompted to enter a two-factor authentication code sent to all of your Apple devices connected to your iCloud account. You can also choose to have the code sent by SMS.

    If the two-factor authentication code is successful, you will be taken into your account, where the files stored in your iCloud account are shown.

    Download files after logging in

    To download files, all you need to do is to tap on the desired file.

    It is also possible to download multiple files. This can be done by long-pressing on the first item you want to download, and then tapping on the other items you wish to download. When ready, you can press on the download button at the top right of the app actionbar.

    You can view your ongoing downloads by going into the home screen, by tapping on ‘home’ in the bottom left-hand corner, and tapping on the ‘view downloads’ button.

    Alternatively, it is also possible to view ongoing downloads by pressing on the notification from within your Android device’s notification center.

    Find downloaded files

    Successfully downloaded files will be stored on your Android device’s ‘Downloads’ folder, which can be accessed from the ‘Downloads’ app, or from your devices file manager.

    If Sync for iCloud is uninstalled, your downloads will remain stored in the ‘Downloads’ folder.

    It is well known that Apple Inc. does not provide a native application on Android to manage files stored in Apple iCloud Drive on an Android device.

    As a result, Sync for iCloud was developed, which lets manage, download and upload files on Apple iCloud Drive on an Android device through a native application.

    Follow these 4 simple steps to get Apple iCloud Drive running on your Android device:

    1. Download Sync for iCloud from the Google Play Store

    Click here to be taken to the Google Play Store and press the ‘Install’ button to start the installation process.

    2. Open the app and enter your username and password

    Enter the username and password used to log in to your iCloud account. In the next step, you will then be asked to enter the 2 factor authentication code which will be sent to one of your Apple devices.

    3. Upon successful authentication, a code will be sent to one of your Apple devices. Enter this code.

    Be sure to have on of your Apple devices next to you as the code will be sent to any of your Apple devices.

    4. Log in is successful

    You may start using the application to manage files, download files or upload files on Apple iCloud Drive.

    One of the problems of switching to Android from iOS is that it is difficult and cumbersome to migrate all of the files stored on iCloud. A particular case would be photos taken on an iOS device, which are then automatically uploaded to the iCloud Drive.

    Fortunately, it is possible to actually access all of your files stored on iCloud Drive, such as photos, from an Android device. The trick is to use Sync for iCloud‘s internal browser to access the iCloud website. Although this is not a very clean solution, its a solution which works and gets the job done.

    Steps

    1. Download Sync for iCloud from the Google Play Store.
    2. Open the app.
    3. Tap on ‘Open iCloud’.
    4. Log in to your iCloud account just as you would on your computer.

    The web browser is not part of Sync for iCloud’s main functionality. This means that support is not offered on this functionality and that this may work for some, but not for others.

    Apart from viewing iCloud files, the Sync for iCloud app also gives you the possibility of synchronizing all of your iCloud calendars natively on your Android device. The developer also gives access to other apps which also let you sync your iCloud contacts and emails to your Android device.

    The best part about these apps is that they are all free to use without any limitations. The only downside is that they contain a minimal amount of ads. However, these never proved to be distracting. If you don’t like ads, you can always make use of the in-app purchase to remove ads.

    View and download iCloud Photos on Android via Sync for iCloud

    Sync for iCloud and Sync for iCloud Contacts are very flexible applications that offer many synchronisation possibilities to users, allowing for multiple iCloud accounts to be synced with any Android device for free.

    We have gone through great lengths to offer the best possible user experience when using our applications. The user interface has been designed to meet Android’s material guidelines while also providing an easy way to log in through iCloud and managing your iCloud accounts. We have also managed to deliver a constant stream of updates which include fixing bugs, improving on the synchronisation process and providing better user guidelines.

    iCloud synchronisation on Android was a technical challenge which we were able to overcome. As per Apple Inc.’s policies and infrastructure, it is not yet possible to synchronise all iCloud functionality to Android natively. Furthermore, Apple Inc. has introduced two-factor log in in June 2017, which requires the user to generate an app specific password to log in to iCloud services from third party applications. This means that certain features would have to be accessed through the iCloud web interface. In this regard, we have integrated a powerful internet browser within our Sync for iCloud and Sync for iCloud Contacts applications for two main reasons: generating app specific password and accessing all iCloud features which cannot be natively managed on Android. The internet browser is therefore an extension to the application, which is not required to use the features of the application, however, extra functionality can be obtained by using the app’s internet browser. This eliminates the need to have access to an extra computer device to manage your iCloud account.

    View and download iCloud pictures on Android

    Viewing and downloading of iCloud pictures on Android can be carried out through the application’s internet browser. This can be done by opening the internet browser from the home screen, and logging in with your iCloud account as you would do on a computer. Once logged in, press the Photos button to view and download photos.

    Manage and download iCloud Pages documents on Android

    ICloud Pages documents can be managed and downloaded from the application’s internet browser. Limited functionality is available in this regard.

    Logging in with 2 factor authentication

    Sync for iCloud, Sync for iCloud Contacts, and Sync for iCloud Mail do not support Apple’s latest authentication methods. Therefore, to log in to your account, you need to create an app specific password.

    The steps below will show you how to check whether you have Apple’s latest authentication method enabled, and how to generate an app specific password. Each time you change your password, you must create a new app specific password.

    1. Open your browser and go to icloud.com. Log in with your iCloud account.

    2. Click on the ‘Settings’ icon.

    3. Click on ‘Manage’ Apple ID.

    4. Click on ‘Generate Password…’

    5. Enter a name for the app-specific password and click ‘Create’.

    6. Open Sync for iCloud/Sync for iCloud Calendar/Sync for iCloud Mail on your Android device and enter the password given by iCloud.
